I am not usually one to go on and on about the good old days, but when I came home from my holidays the other day, I did realise one thing: convenient as emails can be, I miss the feeling of coming home after a long break, barely being able to open the door for the bulk of mail piling up on the floor behind it... granted, the mail's still there these days, but more often than not, you'll throw 80% out because it's flyers or some other junk, and the rest, you'll pick up reluctantly, knowing full well that they contain just another credit card statement or other unpleasantries.
Don't you miss the days when you had heaps of postcards and letters waiting for you? Friends telling you about their trips abroad, each of them trying to outwit the other, a whole palette of colourful snapshots of far-away places?
This year, I decided to do something about it and take part in a postcard exchange, nobody is sending me any voluntarily anymore, so I had to help a little. Thank God there are people in this world who organise postcard swaps these days, for such individuals as me who have lost all hope of getting a hand-written message from abroad...
When I got home last weekend after being stranded in Vienna due to the closure of Heathrow airport, I waded through piles of junk to find a true gem... a postcard from Ohio, not only handwritten, but also handmade!!! How cool is that - thanks, Kim! Apart from the fact that a lot of effort had gone into crafting her own card, I especially liked the stamps showing vegetables - much better than having QEII on each and every one of them... no disrespect, but I'd pick good food over royalty any day!
(Back in the comforting bosom of civilisation, I can also show you the four postcards I sent earlier this month... it appears that Macky has already received them and even found time to blog about them!)
It would seem we all appreciate that personal handwritten (handmade in your case) touch!
At least once in a while it's neat to sent and recieve the handwritten!
Too bad you got caught with the Heathrow mess.
