Almost reaching the end of our holidays, we were on a mission on Day 6. Sightseeing and artsy-fartsy stuff is all well and good, but there's shopping to be done, right? I was keen on returning to Tribeca and the Village and that's where we spent most of our day. We couldn't resist having a last breakfast at Bubby's, without being disturbed by Harvey Keitel this time...
Then we went to walk my credit card a bit more through SoHo and Greenwich - no major purchasing in terms of clothes, but I stumbled across NY Artificial, an interesting little bag shop - a vegan bag shop, to be precise. I had never heard of such a thing before, although familiar with the dietary version of it - so a shop full of bags exclusively made without using animal products, no leather, no fur, you catch my drift. They sell a whole range of things apart from bags as well, exclusively buying from small American designers... lots of unusual stuff in this tiny below-ground shop, very quirky and very affordable at the same time.
I also came across a shop called Biche de Bere - an interesting French designer, maybe a bit too extravagant for my liking (but never mind me, I am boring when it comes to clothes), but I bought a nice pair of cufflinks for my husband and almost purchased a painting as well... the shop is decorated with the works of Solange Umutoni, an artist from Ruanda, and there were two or three I really liked - but didn't have the change of $3,000 handy at this precise moment...
Not going into any more detail about any shops, but I thoroughly enjoyed this stroll... many big cities nowadays have lost all those little shops specialising in this, that and the other and unless you really know your way, the gems are hard to find. I am glad I discovered some of them in the Big Apple!
In the evening, we popped into a pizzeria and although not recommended anywhere and maybe not meriting a raging review here, it was nontheless miles better than Grimaldi's... To finish off our day, we went to the movies again, this time to see "Madagascar" - and then off to the hotel to do some packing!
Yes, Solange Umutoni's art is amazing. She is the Basquiat of our times.
